Founded in 1977 SCAN has grown from a regional nonprofit into one of the top 10 largest Medicare Advantage organizations in the country and #1 health plan in California (outside of the Kaiser Permanente health system plans).
Since 2020, SCAN has more than doubled its membership, increasing from 219,000 to more than 440,000 members. The organization now serves 33 counties across six states: Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, and Washington.
Over the same period, revenue has grown from $3.4 billion to a projected $8 billion, enabling SCAN to reinvest in pioneering benefits, services and care models designed to support the health and independence of older adults.
SCAN’s recent growth was further propelled by its “Health Insurance is Broken” campaign, launched in 2025. This initiative directly tackles the challenges older adults face when navigating the healthcare system, resonating strongly in key SCAN markets. The campaign strengthened SCAN’s reputation as a nonprofit committed to improving the healthcare experience for older adults by providing personalized service, trustworthy guidance, and value-based care.
