Xiong Commends Senate Passing Reintroduced Nine Bills, Healthcare Relief for Public Workers

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 10, 2026 — Today, the Michigan Senate passed Senate Bills 1133-1141, moving forward the Senate versions of the nine limbo bills that House Democrats also promptly reintroduced after Speaker Matt Hall failed to present their original legislation to the governor’s desk for signature for nearly two years. State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) reintroduced House Bill 6237 of 2026, formerly House Bill 6058 of 2024, to deliver direct relief from high healthcare premiums to public workers. In response to the Senate passing their version of this legislation, Senate Bill 1136 sponsored by state Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), Xiong issued the following statement:

“I commend Michigan Senate leadership for taking action to get the immense benefits these bills will provide for Michiganders closer to the finish line. I am committed to helping move forward the Senate version of my legislation, which would deliver immediate financial relief for the workers who dedicate their lives to teaching our children and keeping our communities safe. For too long, the needs of Michigan’s firefighters, law enforcement officers, public school teachers and paraprofessionals have been cast aside by Republican leadership in the House. The Speaker spent more than $300,000 in taxpayer dollars to continue his legal crusade to deny public workers this relief. Now, House Republicans will get another chance to do the right thing for Michigan workers — I urge them to put people first this time.”
