Lyster Hits the Lanes for Suicide Prevention

FORT RUCKER, Ala. — Staff members from Lyster Army Health Clinic laced up their bowling shoes and hit the lanes during their lunch hour September 16, 2026 for a team bowling event held in recognition of Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month.

The event offered staff an opportunity to step away from their daily clinical duties to foster camaraderie, strengthen peer connections, and engage in meaningful dialogue about mental health and wellness. Amid the friendly competition and cheers across the lanes, members of Lyster’s Mental Health team engaged participants with interactive quizzes centered on suicide awareness and intervention skills.

"Our strength doesn't just come from our clinical skill sets; it also comes from our connection to each other. When we step away to bond as people, we build the support that keeps us whole: both at work and at home," remarked Capt. Andre Stewart, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at Lyster, and event organizer.

Throughout September, Lyster’s Mental Health department has led clinic-wide initiatives aimed at destigmatizing mental health care, enhancing peer intervention capabilities, and ensuring healthcare workers remain equipped to support both patients and colleagues.

Military healthcare leadership emphasizes that suicide prevention remains a year-round priority requiring active involvement at every level of the organization.
